10 Killed in New Flooding in Haiti; 4 Regions Affected

Flooding was reported in at least 15 communities in the departments of Grand’Anse, North, Northeast and Northwest in Haiti, following heavy rains on Saturday and Sunday.

The city centre of Cap-Haitien and its communities were particularly affected, either by the flood of torrents of water aggravated by the gullies of the hills or by the rise and discharge of river waters of Haut-du-Cap, HaitiLibre reported.

The provisional toll is ten dead in four departments affected (three women, four men and three children from the same family, including a young girl), three injured, including two children, and one disappeared (adult male).

“The recorded rainfall in the night from Saturday resulted in three injured, one missing and ten dead in the departments of Grand’Anse, Northeast and North, including seven for the community of Cap-Haitien and among them three children,” said the Civil Protection Department (DPC) in a first status report, adding “many neighborhoods are flooded in downtown Cap-Haitien, but also in the communal section of Petite-Anse and Haut-du-Cap.”

The communes of Quartier-Morin and Limonade also reported flooding. The Emergency Operations Centres of Departmental (SEW) North and Northeast are activated. The mobilization of civil protection structures is maintained.”
